Flashing Colors

This next article in our series about roofing products & paying attention to details, we will focus on the aesthetics that the combination of complimentary colors & flashing can bring to a home.

More than just Metal & Flashing

At S&A Roofing, we look at roofs as more than just shingles. Instead, we see them as a system of components including shingles, hip & ridge, underlayment, drip edge, vents, and more.  One of those components that many homes have is a system of metal flashings installed to ensure that the roof functions properly, but they also be used to improve the curbside appeal of a home.

Starting with Reviewing Your Estimate & Complimentary Colors

By picking complimentary metal colors instead of using the same color throughout, the flashing can provide a premium look for the roof and home, but it does so at an add additional cost. That is why it is important to review your roof estimate to check if these are part of the base cost or if they are an optional upgraded. Some possible complimentary colors that you typically will see include the following:

  • Brown
  • Black
  • White
  • Bronze (Weathered grey color)
  • Galvanized

Some Real-World Examples

That are a lot of possible combinations to consider so here are a couple of examples:

  • If you were to install Owens Corning Oakridge shingles in Driftwood color, then Bronze metals would be the complimentary color.
  • If you choose Owens Corning Oakridge shingles in Brownwood, Brown metals would be the complimentary color.

Make Sure Everything is Covered

There are many flashing components that help make up a roofing system and the metal colors above can be purchased for basically all of them including, but not limited to:

  • Drip edge
  • Pipe flashings
  • Turtle type vents
  • Turbine type vents
  • Chimney counter flashing
  • Step flashings
  • Custom flashings
  • Vent caps

And those items that cannot be purchased in pre-finished colors can always be manually painted with the complimentary color of choice.

Bringing it all Together

Small details like complementary colors on your roof’s flashings can add to the cosmetic appeal of the roof and increase the overall curbside look of a home. And while this does add cost, we at S&A Roofing believe it is money well spent since it can add to the value of your home regardless of if you chose a 25 year, 30 year, or 50 year roof replacement system.
